CORVALLIS — Three Springfield Drifters arms kept the series opener in Corvallis within reach, but the offense never capitalized on its opportunities in a 3-0 shutout loss to the Knights (14-14, 10-9).

Kaden Harris started Springfield (9-19, 5-13) off with five solid innings before Sonny Pena extended his scoreless streak to 11.1 innings in the sixth and debuting Drifter Ezra James recorded six clean outs in the seventh and eighth. Despite the strong pitching, the offense wasn’t able to put the pieces together, stranding 10 runners on base in the three-run loss.

“We pitched the ball, for the most part, really well,” Drifters Head Coach Jeff Lyle said. “We gave up single runs in the middle innings, which turned out to be too much to overcome late in the game.”

Early singles by Tristan Jennings and Peyton Tyner allowed the Drifters to string together threats in the first two innings, but Springfield came up empty both times. Harris matched the offensive effort in the bottom of the innings with efficient pitch-to-contact frames.

Corvallis pushed across the opening run in the third inning when a single sprang high over the right side of the infield to score a runner from second. The Knights extended their lead in the next inning with two ground-rule doubles, putting the Drifters in a 2-0 hole.

Through four innings, the Drifters consistently worked deep counts against Knights starter Bryce Hill, and although the right-hander frequently won them, he was replaced in the fifth at 75 pitches.

“We faced a really good arm with an electric fastball up to 99,” Lyle said. “We had a tough time getting anything started, but continued throughout the rest of the game.”

The Knights extended their lead to three in the fifth inning, when center fielder Max Medina reached on a leadoff triple and came home on a sacrifice fly.

While the Knights saw Harris better towards the end of his five innings, he still gave the Drifters a solid start, allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout. The senior righty ended his day on a high note, picking off a runner at first before Pena took over in the sixth inning.

In his lone inning of work, Pena punched out two Knights in a 1-2-3 frame to move to 18 strikeouts in his last 11.1 innings pitched.

Malosi Mata’afa Alferos opened the seventh inning with his second single of the game, which quickly spiraled into a rally thanks to a Karsten Hansen single and a walk by Cooper Mullens. Knights reliever Jack Galanida pushed back with a strikeout before Matthew Kosderka took over on the mound and ended the inning.

“We had opportunities to score but couldn’t come up with a big swing,” Lyle said. “We left ten runners on, which is too many against pitchers like that.”

James began his Drifters career with two timely scoreless innings to keep the game within reach, but the comeback effort never found any momentum.

First pitch for the middle game in Corvallis is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. A radio broadcast will be available on the Drifters’ YouTube channel, while the game can be streamed on the WCL Live App.
