Drifters Debrief: Week Nine
Keenan Anzai pitching for UC Davis
Springfield — Keenan Anzai, who will join the Drifters this summer, tossed a complete game one-hitter against Cal State Bakersfield on Thursday for UC Davis in his best start of the season. The right-hander from Trabuco Canyon, California, fanned six batters across nine scoreless innings while walking just two on 102 pitches en route to his third win of the season for the Aggies. Anzai, a sophomore, is now 3-2 on the season with a 4.75 ERA and a 44-15 strikeout-to-walk ratio across seven starts and 10 appearances. Thursday’s performance was Anzai’s fourth game this season with six or more strikeouts.
Also, on the mound this weekend, 2026 Drifters Kaden Harris, Lucas Geren and Griffin Scott all had quality starts. Harris, who played for the Drifters last summer, struck out three across four scoreless innings for Mount Marty. Geren and Scott, who both play at Lane Community College, each struck out six Southwestern Oregon Community College batters over the weekend, with Geren pitching six innings and Scott tossing four.
Elsewhere, Drifters Alum and local standouts Kaden Starr (24’ & 25’) and Isaac Evaniew (22’) had strong outings in limited innings. Starr, who graduated from Marist High School, struck out three batters across two scoreless innings, only allowing one hit against Gonzaga for Portland. Evaniew, a Churchill graduate, struck out two batters across 1.1 scoreless, no-hit innings for Arkansas-Little Rock.
At the plate, Mac Moyer (22’) had a monstrous return to the South Willamette Valley for Nebraska. The junior outfielder hit his second home run of the season while also recording a triple, a double and four runs during a 5-for-14 weekend. The Washugal, Washington, native, who is the son of longtime MLB pitcher Jamie Moyer, currently leads the Big-10 conference and is 25th nationally with a .401 average this season.
Alumni, Andrew Gauna (24’ & 25’), Chase Nye (24’ & 25’) and Gage Bruce (23’ & 24’) also had big weeks offensively. Gauna finished 8-for-15 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs across four games against UC Irvine and San Francisco for San Diego. Nye registered four doubles as part of a 7-for-16 weekend with four runs scored for Bushnell in their series win versus Warner Pacific and Bruce went 4-for-6 with a double and two runs scored for Portland in three combined games against Gonzaga and Oregon.
Looking ahead to 2026, several soon-to-be Drifters succeeded at the dish. Karsten Hansen, an outfielder from Lower Columbia, had an on-base percentage of .688 with five hits and six walks in nine at-bats across four games against Centralia. Hansen also drove in four runs with a home run and triple for the Red Devils. Peyton Tyner, a Marist High School graduate now playing at Lane, went 8-for-15 (.533) with four doubles and six RBIs for the Titans in four games against SWOCC. His teammate at Lane and with the Drifters this summer, Austin Takahashi, also had four RBIs for the Titans as a part of a 4-for-12 weekend with six runs scored.
Jumping to the minor leagues, Canon Reeder (22’) picked up his first minor league hit, going 1-for-3 on Sunday for the Bradenton Marauders in a game against the Palm Beach Cardinals. Reeder, an Oregon State product, was an 18th-round pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates last summer and is one of five Drifters alum in the minor leagues this spring.
Cooper Mullens, who is returning for his fourth season with the Drifters this summer, went 5-for-13 with an RBI and two runs scored for Michigan in a rivalry series against Michigan State. Diego Vazquez, an Oregon State commit who is joining the Drifters this summer from Fullerton College, reached base safely seven times in 10 plate appearances, finishing with four hits, a double and three runs scored for the Hornets against Saddleback College.
